On Games: My Thoughts Explained

Understanding the Game of Rugby

Rugby is among the contact sports which, at present, is gaining popularity. Rugby combines football and soccer in that it is a hard-hitting physical game like football, and a game of speed and movement, like soccer.

When you look at the size and shape of a rugby ball, you will almost think that it is a football. However, rugby balls are larger than a football. Laces no longer come with the modern version of the rugby ball. There are mandatory and options personal equipment that a rugby player need like a mouthpiece, which is mandatory, and a soft-padded head gear, which is optional.

Rugby is played on a large playing field called the ‘pitch.’ The measurement of this large grassy surface is 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. On every end of the rugby field are uprights. The goal area is behind the uprights. The goals area is 10 meters deep at minimum and the depth is often 22 meters.

Rugby is played by two teams which will be represented on the pitch. Each team consist of fifteen players. The teams are further broken up into two separate groupings called the pack and the backs. The jersey number of pack players are from one to eight. Pack players are made up of the larger, more physical players. The fastest players in the team make up the backs and their jersey numbers are from nine to fifteen.

The objective of the game is to score goals which are known as “try.” Touching the ball down inside your opponent’s end zone earns you a score or a try. Any player can bring the ball to the goal area and make a score. If you make a try, 5 points is awarded to you. A conversion kick is then awarded to a player who makes a try. IF he is successful with his kick, 2 more points are added to the score.

Another way of scoring is through a drop goal. A drop goal is equivalent to 3 points. The drop goal is made by kicking the ball through the upright of your opponent. To make a drop goal the ball should make contact with the ground first before you kick it.

If a player fouls another, then they are given a penalty kick. Your team is given 3 points if you make good on your penalty kick. The player kicks the ball freely on the site where the foul was committed and behind the 22 meter line.

At present, there are many professional levels of rugby. Cities have their own rugby teams, similar to pro football teams in different states. Rugby also has international levels which is the most popular of all the games. International teams are made up of the best players in the city teams in different countries. People are now learning to enjoy international rugby games.
